Dealing with Terrible Food Service

Why do we go out to eat when we have food at home? We ask ourselves this all the time after spending hundreds of dollars on the food we buy to stock in our fridges and pantries. Maybe some of us go out to eat for the atmosphere or because lack cooking skills. Either way, we go wanting a good experience. But what causes a bad experience?

There is a list of situations that cause a bad experience. What makes it worse is the fact that you are paying extra for the luxury of eating out. So when the service is lacking the server is rude which makes some people lose their cool.

One is dirty dishes when you get your beverages and the waiter doesn’t care to notice. The first thing that makes for a bad experience is a terrible wait staff. Other bad experiences are:

  • Food and beverages served at icecold temperatures
  • You get the wrong drink
  • The servers expect you to reach over others to take your hot plate
  • Rude servers that ignore the table
  • Servers that don’t give napkins or refills
  • Not taking food not favored off the bill
  • Not smiling
  • Poor positioning (seat you near the bathroom, kitchen, or register)

How do you deal with bad restaurant service? Well, first off just don’t sit there and take it because you’re scared they will tamper with your meal. It’s against the law “Whoever, with intent to cause serious injury to the business of any person, taints any consumer product or renders materially false or misleading the off, or container for, a consumer product, if such consumer product affects interstate or foreign commerce, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than three years, or both.”{source;www.law.cornell.edu} A risk many won’t take it. So complain don’t fret.

Nobody likes dealing with terrible food service that’s for sure. Bad food and even worse customer service can leave a bad taste in your mouth. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Here are some tips for getting better food service:

1. Complain in the moment. The sooner you can bring a problem to the attention of the staff or manager, the better. The longer you wait, the less likely it is that the problem will get resolved.

2. Speak up. Don’t be afraid to tell the food service staff or manager what disappointed you about the service. Make sure to stay calm and polite during this conversation.

3. Don’t be afraid to leave. If the problem cannot be resolved quickly, don’t think twice about leaving to find food elsewhere.

4. Document your experience. If you are unhappy with the service you received, make sure to write down the details of the incident, such as the date and time, what you ordered, and what went wrong. This way, if you decide to take further steps such as filing a complaint or seeking a refund, you’ll have evidence to back up your case.

Next, identify the primary source of the problem. Was the food at fault, or was it the service that disappointed you? Consider bringing up any noteworthy issues with the restaurant manager or supervisor, but do this in a polite and respectful manner.

Analyze the atmosphere of the restaurant itself, as well as the behavior of the staff. Did the establishment appear to be clean? Were the waitstaff friendly? Did it seem like their workload was manageable? By pinpointing what went wrong, you can better explain to the manager why the dining experience was subpar.

Depending on the severity of the service, you may want to reach out even further. Keeping in mind that you should be respectful throughout the process, contact the restaurant’s main customer service line, or consider filing an online review to spread awareness about your experience.

The most important part of dealing with bad food service is to be as clear and factual as possible when expressing your feelings to the staff. Make sure that your requests are reasonable — such as a discount or an apology — and be prepared to wait for a response. If, after all efforts, you still haven’t received a satisfactory outcome, it could be

time to take your case to the restaurant’s management or even further, to the local health department.

Poor food service and customer service can be one of the most frustrating experiences when dining out. Whether it’s a long wait for your food, cold or incorrect orders, or even rude wait staff, it’s important to remain professional and polite while attempting to resolve the situation.

The first, and perhaps the most important, step to take when dealing with terrible food service is to remain calm and patient. Everyone makes mistakes and there may have been a genuine misunderstanding. By remaining calm, you can also ensure that all parties involved can work together to resolve the issue without raising voices or causing offense.

The next steps you should take are to explain what happened politely and accurately and to let the staff know your expectations for a solution. If you’re not satisfied with the response, keep striving for a resolution.
