How to have Mindful Communication with Others

two egg heads

Before you can practice mindful communication you first should know the meaning of mindfulness. Mindfulness means: to be in a mental state of awareness obtained by concentrating your attention on this current moment in time, while calmly acknowledging and being aware of others’ bodies, minds, and souls. Once you understand that you can practice mindful communication. Everything in life starts with an inner understanding that you can use to navigate through your personal life.

Practicing mindful communication helps one deal with anxiety. Centering your thoughts opens your mind to others and takes away your self-doubts. The principles that help the process are:

1. Establishing an intention

2. Being mentally present

3 . Having an open mind by being non-judgmental

4. Connect to others with compassion

An open heart shares the joys and pains of others. We discover new worlds of experiences in our conversations with others because we aren’t blocked by our own opinions. The more we learn, the more we change, and the more we expand. Instead of reacting, be responsive.

Consider what happens when something unexpected occurs, when we feel uncertain. We become more curious about this turning point through mindfulness, both in our communication with others and within ourselves.

When communicating mindfully, we take the time to listen to the other person without judgement or criticism. We allow them to express themselves without passing judgement or arguing with them. We also give ourselves permission to pause and to respond instead of reacting.

We use open-ended questions to invite conversation and to really get to know a person. We check in with ourselves and acknowledge our own thoughts, emotions and reactions.

We make room for our own body language and facial expressions, as well as the other person’s body language and facial expressions. We take note of not just what they are saying, but how they are saying it. We focus on what they are trying to tell us and be receptive to their point of view.

Finally, we respect our differences and practice acceptance and compassion. Listening to someone with full presence can be transformational; it opens up space for deeper connection and understanding.

When we embrace mindfulness in our communication with others, we create an environment of openness, respect and understanding. We learn to be more present, understanding and connected.
